The Endobarrier technique is a special treatment designed for improving and controlling diabetes as it allows the blood glucose levels to be lowered.

The Endobarrier (an endoprosthesis with a tubular shape) is placed in the intestine (in the first 60 cm of the intestine) using a tube that is inserted orally, meaning that no incision is necessary. Once the device has been positioned it starts to act immediately without interruption, 24 hours a day.

Its function replicates the effect produced in the body when a Metabolic Bypass is performed, which prevents the passage of the stomach content to the duodenum (first portion of the small intestine).

This effect allows undigested food arriving at the end part of the intestine to be digested more quickly, thereby making it easy to lose weight and improving the production of insulin in the pancreas, and increasing the body’s ability to control the blood sugar levels.

Weight loss caused by a loss of appetite and an improvement in blood sugar levels makes it easy to control type 2 diabetes. This makes the patient less dependent on the medication and delays or prevents the daily use of insulin.

The insertion of the device takes about 20 minutes and from the next day, the patient can lead a normal life. However this is not a final method as the device cannot remain in the stomach for more than 12 months.

During that time, as occurs with other obesity treatments, the patient should change his/her eating habits and lifestyle

It is currently indicated in persons with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 35 and in diabetic patients.

Nonetheless, other applications are being studied in patients with type 2 diabetes who are not necessarily overweight.

Different medical studies conclude that this technique has average weight loss results of 18% of body weight (in nine months) and an improvement in blood glucose levels in 87% of the cases.

The ideal patient is an overweight person with type 2 diabetes. However it is important to stress that this technique DOES NOT make the diabetes disappear but improves the control of the disease.
